Safe Driving

Defensive Driving School is about being safe.

Defensive driving school solves a huge problem for parents and teens alike.

We weren’t thinking about safe driving when my wife and I adopted our first child several years ago. We didn’t really understand why we had to stop on the way to the hospital to buy a baby car seat, a child safety seat. In those days they were referred to as car seats, but after the kids outgrow their first car seat, what do you do?

Having a baby meant new changes for us and safe driving suddenly became a priority as we investigated the tools we would need for our baby.

We went through a lot of these child safety seats and suddenly we had more than we needed because the kids were growing pretty quickly. Back at its inception, safety for kids in the car was a new subject. We had to search for answers.

What if your children are in-between the adult seat and their beginning seat-the one with a wonderful view of the world? The answer is a booster seat. These in between seats for children are now recommended by the Center For Disease Control.

A booster seat is not used interchangeably with the old car seats, now referred to as child safety seats. It is the second stage seating. Kind of like when you move up from concert tickets. First you sit in the back row of the balcony, then you save enough money to move downstairs to the mezzanine. Just kidding, but you get the idea.

You might think this is just another way to sell you something, but it isn’t the case. Booster seats have specific parameters and if your child has outgrown his or her original seat, consider the safety of providing a booster seat.

Does My Child Need A Booster Seat?

5-9 year old children are at a high risk when involved in traffic accidents. Kids should use a booster seat when their ears are level with the top of the back of the safety seat and their shoulders are above the top straps slots or when they reach the upper weight limits for the seat. This according to the CDC as proclaimed during National Child Passenger Safety Week.

Back Seat Drivers

The term used to be standard in my family as my father constantly critiqued my driving abilities. Turn Left-No right. Now, well, for several years experts have been preaching about the safety of riding in the back seat. They recommend that children 12 years of age and under, ride in the back seat whenever possible, regardless of whether they use a booster seat or not.
